For those of you in the Atlanta area, Richard is featured in this Sunday’s (2006/09/23) edition of the AJC! Just for fun, I went out to the website to see if the story was online yet and I found it - along with an 8 picture gallery from today’s put-in and departure.

I don’t have the gallery of my pictures up yet, but this is a good “teaser” for what’s to come. I am also working on the summary of his first day on the trip - he called to let us know about the rest of his day and that he was safely in camp for the night.

Day 49: The end of a great trip

 
 

While Richard spent Thursday night was spent in a comfortable, air conditioned and heated house and actually slept in a bed with a mattress, it was not his most comfortable night of the trip. (more…)

Thursday morning, Richard woke up on the platform where he’d camped along the Bartram Canoe & Kayak trail near the Tensaw River. It was still hard for him to believe that this was one of his last day’s paddling on this trip. (more…)

Richard woke up early this morning at 3:35 AM, looked at the clock and immediately knew that he’d made a mistake when pulling into camp the night before. (more…)


Day 46: He’s so tired that he actually yawned!

 
 

The rain continued through the night and finally stopped around 10:00 PM, but not for long. The rain continued off and on all night long. Richard woke up many times throughout the night. (more…)


Day 45: And the rains came…

 
 

On Monday morning, Richard woke up at 5:50 AM. The sun was up, but it was once again hiding behind the clouds. He fixed his usual cup of coffee and relaxed for a while. (more…)


Day 44: Richard learns of the legend of “Red Eagle”

 
 

Saturday night was just “as warm as hell” (in Richard’s words) and the moon was full. The sky was clear and Richard enjoyed the stars that were out in the sky. For dinner, he ate Beanie Weenies, Cheez-It crackers and applesauce from an MRE. (more…)

After spending the coldest night yet on his trip camping on a sandbar along the riverbank, Richard woke up at 6:00 AM on Saturday morning. He built the fire back up to keep warm - it was still “damn cold” that morning. (more…)


Day 42: The coldest night yet

 
 

Friday morning began early for Richard; he woke up at 5:40 AM and went for a 1 mile run. When he returned to his campsite, his hands were freezing (we should pitch in to buy him some gloves!). (more…)

At 6:20 AM, Richard awoke to some sudden sounds in the area near his tent. At first he thought that the sounds might be from a train passing through. (more…)

Wednesday morning began at 6:15 AM when Richard woke up at Clifton Ferry Park along the Alabama River. He had coffee and canned peaches for breakfast and then took a walk up to a barn with the Coca-Cola logo painted on the side. (more…)

Richard awoke Tuesday around 5:15 AM and went for a 1.5 mile run. After returning from his morning run, he showered and washed his clothes at the campground. (more…)

Richard woke up on Monday morning around 5:50 AM - it was cold and foggy. He realized that he had stopped and camped on a golf course the previous evening, so he was in a hurry to pack up and leave. (more…)

On Sunday morning, Richard woke up at 5:05 AM - daylight savings ended began during the nighttime hours. The “moon time” was the same time as the previous day, thus his early rising on Sunday. (more…)

Friday morning started early – Richard woke up 5:35 AM and found that it was still dark and misting rain outside. He rebuilt the campfire that had died overnight and set out to take a shower. (more…)
